During the start of this painting, pomegranates and their symbolism had started trending. Pomegranates have had strong symbolism tied to women dating back to the greeks with the story of Persephone and Hades.
With this painting I wanted to portray a spotted hyena, often perceived as brutish, ugly, and stupid, wearing a pearl necklace; a symbol in modern culture often reflecting wealth, beauty, and high status. Pomegranates scattered in the back symbolize passion, beauty, and mediation between life and death.
